Every San Diegan has one. This is the taco shop where you can conceivably eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner at on the same day, and probably have once in your life. It's where you go when your undecisive about what to eat, where you go after you drink, or when you just need something fast on the way home cause you're tired of Trader Joe's orange chicken for dinner. It's typically located in the strip mall closest to your house or work and open all the time for convenience. It's the local taco shop.
At the local, no dish is amazing, but every thing is pretty decent, and you've eaten there so many times you know what to avoid and what items are actually pretty good.
My local shop since high school has been Super Sergio's in National City. I think of Sergio's, and local shops, as a generalist in the world of taco shops (vs. specialists like mariscos joints or tacos-only places)- they make everything from shrimp cocktails and pozole, to rolled tacos and enchiladas.
If you're ever visiting San Diego, just ask any long-time resident for their favorite spot and the go-to dish and theyre sure to guide you a decent spot. Be careful though, it get's pretty intense in terms of local taco shop pride- if you ask too many people at the same time where to get the best mexican food, youre bound to get a heated argument. For the most part, people's sentiment get in the way of objective judgement and their local taco shops aren't really that much better than anyone elses (except mine). If anything, just wander towards the nearest glow of a neon "Abierto" sign you can almonst never have a bad hard shell taco, rolled taco, or carne asada burrito at any local joint.
How it's influenced Fritas Shack: Directly, i've tried to mimic their rolled tacos as theyre my personal favorites. I've also loved their red sauce growing up. Really, what stands out to me and why I love them a lot is thei great service. Their service is fast and accurate, no matter if you're alione on a Tuesday at 10am or behind a ton of drunks in the drive thru at 2am on a Saturday night. Over the hundreds of times I've been there and ordered custom items, theyve always gotten it right, and served it up pretty fast. One time, I asked them for a california burrito to be deep fried like a chimichanga- theyve done it. This place is always my first and last stop when I visit home.
